چکیده

We study mixing properties (topological mixing and weak mixing of arbitrary order) for nonautonomous linear dynamical systems that are induced by the corresponding dynamics on certain invariant sets. The type of nonautonomous systems considered here can be defined by a sequence (Ti)i∈N of linear operators Ti : X → X on a topological vector space X such that there is an invariant set Y for which the dynamics restricted to Y satisfies certain mixing property. We then obtain the corresponding mixing property on the closed linear span of Y . We also prove that the class of nonautonomous linear dynamical systems that are weakly mixing of order n contains strictly the corresponding class with the weak mixing property of order n + 1.

Almost-invariant and finite-time coherent sets: directionality, duration, and diffusion

Regions in the phase space of a dynamical system that resist mixing over a finite-time duration are known as almost-invariant sets (for autonomous dynamics) or coherent sets (for nonautonomous or time-dependent dynamics). These regions provide valuable information for transport and mixing processes; almost invariant sets mitigate transport between their interior and the rest of phase space, and...

Coherent sets for nonautonomous dynamical systems

We describe a mathematical formalism and numerical algorithms for identifying and tracking slowly mixing objects in nonautonomous dynamical systems. In the autonomous setting, such objects are variously known as almost-invariant sets, metastable sets, persistent patterns, or strange eigenmodes, and have proved to be important in a variety of applications. In this current work, we explain how to...

An analytic framework for identifying finite-time coherent sets in time-dependent dynamical systems

The study of transport and mixing processes in dynamical systems is particularly important for the analysis of mathematical models of physical systems. Barriers to transport, which mitigate mixing, are currently the subject of intense study. In the autonomous setting, the use of transfer operators (Perron–Frobenius operators) to identify invariant and almost-invariant sets has been particularly...

Almost-invariant sets and invariant manifolds – connecting probabilistic and geometric descriptions of coherent structures in flows

We study the transport and mixing properties of flows in a variety of settings, connecting the classical geometrical approach via invariant manifolds with a probabilistic approach via transfer operators. For non-divergent fluid-like flows, we demonstrate that eigenvectors of numerical transfer operators efficiently decompose the domain into invariant regions. For dissipative chaotic flows such ...

Nonautonomous Discrete Dynamics: Discretization and Taylor Approximation

In this talk, we consider a class of nonautonomous difference equations (recursions) possessing an attractive invariant manifold in the extended state space. It is our aim to study the behavior of this manifold, as well as of its corresponding asymptotic phase under perturbation. Our framework is sufficiently general to include discrete counterparts of (center-)unstable and inertial manifolds. ...
